While many people opine that drug smugglers should be punished by death row, others completely oppose this idea and argue that a less severe punishment should be in action. Recently, Australia urged Indonesia not to execute drug smugglers on death row. What is your opinion on that?

As a professional, I believe that the issue of drug smuggling and the appropriate punishment for those convicted of this crime is a complex and sensitive one. While I understand the desire for justice and the need to address the serious consequences of drug trafficking, I also believe that there are more effective and humane ways to deal with this issue than resorting to the death penalty.
First and foremost, it is important to consider the fundamental human rights of all individuals, regardless of their actions. The use of the death penalty is a violation of the right to life, and it is a punishment that cannot be reversed if new evidence comes to light or if a miscarriage of justice has occurred. In addition, there is a growing body of evidence that suggests that the death penalty is not an effective deterrent to crime, including drug smuggling. Rather than preventing others from engaging in similar activities, the use of the death penalty may actually perpetuate a cycle of violence and retribution.
Furthermore, there are alternative approaches to addressing drug smuggling that have been shown to be more effective in both deterring criminal activity and promoting rehabilitation. For example, investing in education and social programs, providing access to treatment for addiction, and improving economic opportunities in communities that are vulnerable to drug trafficking can help to address the root causes of this issue. Additionally, imposing lengthy prison sentences and offering opportunities for offenders to participate in rehabilitation programs can help to ensure that they are held accountable for their actions while also giving them the chance to turn their lives around.
In the case of Australia urging Indonesia not to execute drug smugglers on death row, I believe that this is a step in the right direction. By advocating for a more humane and effective approach to addressing drug smuggling, Australia is promoting the values of justice, compassion, and human rights. I hope that other countries will follow suit and work towards finding solutions to this issue that are both fair and effective.
