To be labelled a ‘work of art’, a painting, sculpture or other art forms should display certain qualities that are unique. However, over the past century, there has been a decline in the quality of prize-winning artwork and it is now possible for quite ordinary pieces of art to be labelled ‘masterpiece’ whilst true works of art pass unnoticed. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

In today’s world, the definition of a “work of art” has become increasingly subjective, leading to a decline in the quality of prize-winning artwork. While some argue that ordinary pieces of art are being labeled as masterpieces, I believe that true works of art still receive the recognition they deserve.
First and foremost, the term “work of art” is inherently subjective, as art is open to interpretation. What one person may consider ordinary, another may view as extraordinary. This subjectivity has led to a decline in the quality of prize-winning artwork, as the criteria for judging art has become increasingly blurred. In some cases, pieces that lack true artistic merit are being labeled as masterpieces simply because they align with current trends or popular opinion.
