Formal examinations are the only effective way to assess a student’s performance. Continual assessment such as course work and projects is not a satisfactory way to do this. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement?

There is no denying that formal examinations have been the traditional method of assessing a student’s performance for many years. However, the idea that they are the only effective way to do so is a rather narrow-minded viewpoint. In fact, continual assessment through course work and projects can provide a more comprehensive and accurate evaluation of a student’s abilities.
First and foremost, formal examinations have their limitations. They often place a great deal of pressure on students, leading to anxiety and stress, which can negatively impact their performance. Additionally, exams only provide a snapshot of a student’s knowledge at a specific point in time, failing to take into account their overall understanding of the subject matter. On the other hand, continual assessment allows for a more holistic evaluation of a student’s progress. By assessing their performance over a period of time, educators can gain a more accurate understanding of their strengths and weaknesses.
Furthermore, course work and projects provide students with the opportunity to demonstrate their understanding of the material in a practical and meaningful way.
